Tips on how to help extend the life of your AC system

There are a number of reasons as to why a central air unit will run less than ideal or fail to function at times. One of the reasons for failure to operate that has been observed is through the air filter. The air filer within your HVAC system is not meant to last forever; it is meant to be changed every so often. So how often should the air filter be changed on the air conditioning system? How often depends on a number of factors. One factor is the environment that the unit is installed in. If the environment is fairly clean then it may not need to be replaced as often compared to a unit that sits in a dusty environment. Another factor is the frequency that the HVAC system is used. There are recommendations that says the air filter should be changed every month, and some every 6 months depending on the filter and other factors. Our recommendation on how often the filter needs to be changed is to look at what the manufacturer of the filter has recommended. A dirty air filter will undoubtedly cause a drop in efficiency in an AC unit, which will then translate to higher energy cost since the unit now has to do more work.

Be sure to check that there’s no blockage whatsoever around the condenser unit for your air conditioning system. If the air is impeded then the condenser cannot operate or carry out its heat exchange process efficiently; and if it cannot operate efficiently the way it is designed to then failure of the condenser unit is inevitable. During operation the condenser unit will end up working harder and your home or that area that the AC is supposed to cool down might not be able to achieve that desired set temperature.

Another great way to keep your AC system running at tip top shape and help extend its life is have a professional HVAC tech come and check it on a yearly basis. By having a yearly plan you’ll be able to help catch issues that have the potential to cause serious damage and be very expensive to rectify. Contact BAT HVAC Plumbing to explore a maintenance plan for your AC system.
